Top Drive Drilling System

Top Drive Drilling system (TDDS) is a new type drilling machinery without the traditional rotary table. It consists of traveling block, power swivel, power unit, guide dolly, hydraulic station, pipe making up/breaking out set and control panel.

The drill string is rotated directly by a power swivel that is powered by DC speed regulating motor, AC frequency converting (FC) speed regulating motor or hydraulic motor. The pipe making up/breaking out set includes rotating head, power tongs, dual direction elevator link tilt mechanism, remote control IBOP valve, manual IBOP valve and elevator. When breaking out, the remote control IBOP vale is closed and the height pressure mud flow is cut off by the control panel, the breaking out is made by the power tong, the power swivel rotates counterclockwise and hoists upward the protective connector. When making up, use either the power tong or the power swivel. The torque may be adjusted for makeup and breakout. The power swivel and the pipe making up/breaking out set are assembled together and can be moved upward along the guide rails by the guide dolly. The rotating head and elevator link tilt mechanism are used for grabbing and handling stands.

The major features of TDDS are that it can rotate the drill string clockwise or counterclockwise and circulate the mud at the same time. Besides, it is equipped with the mechanized pipe making up/breaking out set that can reduce the stuck accident, improve the drilling efficiency, greatly reduce the time of breakout/makeup operation, lower the labour intensity and make the operation safe and reliable. The oil field practices show that TDDS can reduce drilling time by 15?~25?.

TDDS is suitable especially for drilling deep wells, ultra deep wells, cluster wells, deviated wells and horizontal wells in offshore and land as well as well as in the regions where the geologic structure is complicated. Also, it may be widely used in the existing land rigs if they need to be reformed.
